New living cells could soon be ‘printed’

Technology adapted from inkjet printers could soon be used to print living human cells onto biodegradable polymer scaffolds.

Researchers have spent three years developing the technology, which could be used to regrow nerve cells such as those in damaged spinal cords, along with a special “ink” to carry the cells.

The scientists are now working to produce structures up to 4cm long, containing growth factor molecules and electrical conduits to stimulate cell growth, which could be patched into damaged nerves or muscles.
