Probiotics prevent diarrhoea caused by antibiotics

Yeast in probiotic foods and supplements is beneficial for preventing C.difficile-associated diarrhoea after antibiotic use.

Antibiotics disrupt useful bacteria that live in the gut, leaving the body vulnerable to Clostridium difficile (C. difficile) infection, which can cause diarrhoea or colitis.

CDAD is usually expensive to treat, the use of probiotics could be a low-cost preventative method, a review by the Cochrane Library has concluded.
