Joe Masoodi's research interests are situated at the intersection of technology, surveillance, security and human rights. He is interested in how emerging digital technologies can be used to engage and benefit the public by aligning technology policy decisions with democratic values and principles. He has conducted research on social media monitoring and policing, big data surveillance, UAVs, the digital divide, contact tracing apps, data storage and sovereignty, and facial recognition technologies to name a few. He holds an MA in war studies from the Royal Military College of Canada, an MA in sociology from Queen’s University, and has studied sociology as a PhD candidate from Queen’s University, specializing in digital media, information and surveillance.
