Mark Fathi Massoud

Mark Fathi Massoud is Professor of Politics and Legal Studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He is also a Visiting Professor at the University of Oxford Faculty of Law. Massoud teaches courses and advises students in international law, human rights, comparative law, research methods, and the politics of law and religion.

Massoud has held Guggenheim, Carnegie, ACLS, and Mellon New Directions fellowships. He is a former fellow of the Program in Law and Public Affairs at Princeton University, the Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law at Stanford University. He has also taught at McGill University (Canada) and Konstanz University (Germany). Professor Massoud is co-editor of the Cambridge Studies in Law and Society book series. He serves on the editorial boards of Law & Society Review, Law & Social Inquiry, Law & Policy, and the International Journal of Law in Context. He is a former trustee of the Law and Society Association, and he currently serves on the Advisory Council of the National Science Foundation Law & Science Dissertation Grant program.

Massoud’s research addresses the interplay between religion and the rule of law, focusing on the politics of law and humanitarian aid in conflict settings. He is the author of Shari‘a, Inshallah (Cambridge University Press 2021) and Law's Fragile State (Cambridge University Press 2013). Born in Sudan and raised in California, Massoud holds a JD and PhD from the University of California, Berkeley.
