Dr Peta L Hitchens' is currently a researcher in animal welfare and epidemiology at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, a member of WelRisk, one of the world's leading competence centres for animal welfare risk assessment and surveillance, and an Honorary Research Associate of the Menzies Research Institute Tasmania.

She has served as an advisor to the US Racing Equipment and Safety Committee of the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation.

She was a postdoctoral scholar under the Racing Injury Prevention Program, funded by the California Horse Racing Board, at the University of California, Davis.

Her PhD was on the epidemiology of jockey falls, injuries and fatalities in Australian horse racing.

She has worked in a regulatory capacity in the racing industry, and has been involved in the breeding and racing of Thoroughbreds for the last 15 years.
