Sung-Ae Lee

Lecturer in the Department of Media, Communications, Creative Arts, Language and Literature at Macquarie University.

Dr Sung-Ae Lee’s major research focus is on literature, film and television drama of East Asia, with particular attention to Korea. Her research centres on relationships between cultural ideologies in Asian societies and representational strategies. She is interested in cognitive approaches to adaptation studies, Asian popular culture, Asian cinema, the impact of colonisation in Asia, Trauma Studies, fiction and film produced in the aftermath of the Korean War, and the literature and popular media of the Korean diaspora.

Her work has appeared in numerous scholarly journals, including Adaptation, Asian Cinema, Asian Ethnology, Children’s Literature in Education, Diaspora, International Research in Children’s Literature, Journal of Asian American Studies, Mosaic and Series, and in essay collections such as Subjectivity in Asian Children’s Literature and Film (Routledge 2013), Grimms’ Tales Around the Globe (Wayne State University Press 2014), Fairy Tale Films Beyond Disney (Routledge 2015), The Routledge Companion to International Children’s Literature (Routledge 2017), The Fairy Tale World (Routledge 2019), The Palgrave Handbook of Children’s Film and Television (Palgrave 2019) and Asian Children’s Literature and Film in a Global Age (Palgrave 2020).
