Renewable technologies may be a cheaper and a lower risk investment for Australia given rising and uncertain gas prices.
University of New South Wales researchers modelled the risks and uncertainties of using gas-fired electricity compared to renewable technologies, such as wind, solar and hydro power.
The study found electricity costs are likely to be lower and more certain using a diverse renewable energy portfolio.
The findings indicated it may also be worth reviewing other possible uses of existing electricity infrasture, such as coal-fired generators, in Australia.
