Retraction: why we removed an article about stationery and deforestation

Today we removed an article called “Over-logging in the Sumatran forest? Blame your diary” after becoming aware of a significant factual error that undermined some of the article’s key arguments.

The article claimed that stationery company Collins Debden does not hold a Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification, and therefore that its products contribute to global rainforest destruction.

We have since learned that Collins Debden was granted an FSC certificate on September 25, 2014 – after the article was drafted but before it was published.

We are committed to providing accurate and reliable information, and to acknowledging errors in an open and transparent way when they occur.

We apologise for the mistake.
