Robot flying bugs mimic butterflies

Engineers have been studying the movement of butterflies to help refine the behaviour of small airborne robots.

The researchers filmed butterflies with high-speed video cameras to record the intricacies of their flight methods.

The knowledge gained from the butterfly study will help the engineers to develop bug-sized flying robots to carry out reconnaissance, search-and-rescue and environmental monitoring missions, all without risking human lives.
