Scientists create ‘light saber’ state of matter

Scientist have managed to bind light together to form molecules, a state of matter which has been compared to creating a light saber.

Researchers were able to create a medium which binds photons together so strongly they acted as though they had mass.

This type of photonic state had previously been discussed theoretically, but until now hadn’t been scientifically observed.

The discovery is expected to have practical applications in quantum information technologies and could possibly lead to the construction of complex, three-dimensional structures wholly out of light.
