The missing link (for fungi)

An unknown type of fungi that may be a missing link, or ‘living fossil’, in the fungi tree of life has been found by researchers at the University of Exeter.

Temporarily named cryptomycota (meaning hidden fungi), it changes the understanding of the whole fungi group because it lacks a tough cell wall which is important for how fungi feed and grow.

Originally found in the university’s pond, cryptomycota are spread all over the world.
