A team of researchers from Pennsylvania State University has found that the fungus Fusarium, commonly associated with infection in humans, is commonly found in household drains.
Researchers examined nearly 500 sink drains around the United States and found at least one Fusarium isolate in 66% of drains. Inhabitants of buildings with drains harbouring Fusarium are exposed to the fungus on a regular basis.
Fusarium infections in humans are rare. But the organism is resistant to many anti-fungal drugs and poses a risk to those with weak immune systems.
