Unique owl calls lead to discovery of two new species

Two new species of owl have been confirmed in the Philippines.

Researchers had been aware for some time of new subspecies of Ninox hawk-owls in the region, but further research revealed that the supposed subspecies were in fact separate species.

The unique calls of both owl species confirmed the discovery, as the songs of owls are not learnt but are genetically programmed.
