Yoga offers greater benefits to cancer patients

Yoga offers women undergoing radiation therapy for breast cancer numerous benefits, including improved physical functioning, better general health and lower stress hormone (cortisol) levels, researchers have found. The yoga practitioners were also better able to find meaning in their cancer experience.

Researchers compared the experiences of patients in an active control group who integrated simple, generic stretching exercises into their lives with patients who participated in yoga practice that incorporated yogic breathing, postures, meditation and relaxation techniques into their treatment plan.

The study is the latest in an ongoing effort to scientifically validate the age-old belief that mind-body interventions have a beneficial impact on the health of cancer patients.
