Materialistic behaviour and stress link stronger than first thought

The link between materialistic behaviour and stress may be stronger than originally though, according to new research led by Michigan State University.

Carried out across two Israeli towns – one town under rocket attack for six months in 2007 and the other not – the research found materialistic people had much higher levels of post-traumatic stress than those who were less materialistic.

The study, to appear in the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, found materialistic people are “more likely to try to relieve fear of death through impulsive and out-of-control spending”. And impulsive spending appears to make the bad event worse, lead author Ayalla Ruvio said.
