Alan has recently been awarded his PhD, in the representations of the North of England in British Fiction Sound Film of the Twentieth Century, from the University of Central Lancashire.

His areas of interest include the social and cultural history of the North of England from the mid-nineteenth century onwards, particularly with reference to issues of gender and class. A further area of Alan's specialisation relates to British film outputs (as both commercial and cultural products), notably in the post-1927 period. Alan has published on the North of England on film, and is currently co-editing a book about Blackpool on screen and in popular music.
