Trained in the UK then moved to academic positions at Stanford University in California and Northwestern University in Chicago. Director of the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory, Crested Butte, Colorado and the Australian Commonwealth Key Centre for Biodiversity and Bioresources at Macquarie University, Sydney. Auuthor of several books including 'Wild Solutions: Why Biodiversity is Money in the Bank' (with P.R. Ehrlich) Yale University Press and Melbourne University Press (2004). Edited 'Biodiversity: Australia's Living Wealth', Reed Books, Sydney (1995).
Author and co-author of 200+ scientific articles. Main current interest is biodiversity and its economic importance. Lead author in the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (2005) U.N. & World Bank.
