He is Associate Professor of Satellite Oceanography since 2012. Garcia-Soto received his doctorate in Oceanography in 1994 from the University of Southampton, the 4th University in the world in the Shanghai ranking. He was a research fellow in the Plymouth Marine Laboratory for 7 years in the Ocean Climate, Ocean Circulation and Ocean Color Research Group. He is currently Director of the Global Change joint research unit created in 2016 by IEO and UPV/EHU. Principal Investigator of four recent European research projects on Climate Change (CERES, 2016-20), Blue Economy (BLUEMED 2016-2021), Marine Technology (ECFAS, 2021-23) and Space Observation (NAUTILOS, 2020-24). He is the coordinator of the Group of Experts of United Nations that is elaborating the 3rd World Ocean Assessment (WOAIII; 2020-2025). This Assessment Report summarizes and updates for the UN General Assembly the global state of the marine environment including socio-economic aspects. His involvement with UN have also included participating as a senior scientist in the Conference of the Parties (COP) on Climate Change, the Inter-Governmental Conference for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biodiversity in ABNJ, and the World Conference for Sustainable Development Goal 14. He was awarded in 2005 a Mention of Honor in science divulgation by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECyT), the Royal Spanish Society of Physics (RSEF) and the Royal Society of Mathematics of Spain (RSME). Invited speaker at the United Nations Plenary on “The impacts of Climate Change on the Oceans" in 2017, "The Decade of the Oceans for Sustainable Development" in 2019 and "Sea Level Rise and its impacts" in 2021. He has been elected Vice-Chair of the European Marine Board (EMB), Chair of the Steering Committee of Euromarine, and President of the European Center for Information on Marine Science and Technology (EurOcean). @CGarciaSoto_IEO
