David R. Montgomery

Professor of Earth and Space Sciences, University of Washington

David R. Montgomery is a MacArthur Fellow who studies the evolution of topography and the influence of geomorphological processes on ecological systems and human societies. He received his B.S. in geology at Stanford University and his Ph.D. in geomorphology from UC Berkeley. His published research includes studies of the evolution and near-extirpation of salmon, fluvial and hillslope processes in mountain drainage basins, the evolution of mountain ranges (Cascades, Andes, and Himalaya). He is the author of award-winning popular-science books (King of Fish, Dirt, and The Rocks Don't Lie) and co-authored The Hidden Half of Nature: The Microbial Roots of Life and Health with his wife, biologist Anne Biklé. His latest book, Growing a Revolution: Bringing Our Soil Back to Life, addresses the potential for regenerative agriculture to revolutionize farming.
