Dimitra Gkitsa

I am an interdisciplinary scholar working on the intersection of memory studies, contemporary art and the post-socialist visual cultures, with a particular focus on the geo-political region of the Balkans.

Following postgraduate studies in Curating (Department of Fine Arts, Goldsmiths University of London) and Cultural Management (Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences, Athens), I completed a PhD in Visual Cultures at Goldsmiths, University of London. My doctoral research analysed collective art practices in Southeast Europe and it was funded by the Onassis Foundation.

I have worked as an Associate Lecturer in Visual Cultures at Goldsmiths, University of London and a Module Leader in Fine Art – Critical and Cultural Studies at the University of Hertfordshire. In 2019, I was a Research Assistant on the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) funded project The Museums + AI Network.

Outside academia, I have collaborated with non-for-profit organisations, including the British Council in Athens and the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) in London. I am currently the Alexander Nash Research Fellow at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies (SSEES), University College London (UCL), where I explore the legacy of (post)industrialism in Albania.
