Professor of Biochemistry, Stellenbosch University

Erick Strauss is a Professor in the Department of Biochemistry, Stellenbosch University, where he leads a research group focused on finding new avenues for developing treatments of infectious diseases. These include exploiting the pathogen's production and utilization of selected vitamins, attempting to augment the body's own natural immune defenses against bacterial infections, and most recently developing treatments that rely on hijacking the pathogens own protein degradation machinery to target essential proteins. He currently leads a consortium of African scientists working on new tuberculosis treatments.
