Professor of History, University of Michigan

Joshua Cole has been a professor of history at the University of Michigan since 2004. He earned his Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley, and his B.A. at Brown University.

Cole's research and teaching deal primarily with the social and cultural history of Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries. He has published work on gender and the history of the population sciences, colonial violence, and the politics of memory in France, Algeria, and Germany. He is also a co-author, along with Carol Symes, of a widely taught textbook on European history, Western Civilizations (W.W. Norton, 2016, 19th edition).
