Professor of International Development, UCL

Professor Kate Maclean joined the Centre for International Development at Northumbria University in 2019. She previously held a Senior Lectureship in Geography at Birkbeck, University of London (2013-19), where she was also Director of Birkbeck Gender Sexuality, and a Lectureship in Geography at King’s College London (2008-2013). Her research on feminist geographies of development and globalisation has attracted funding from the Leverhulme Trust, Wellcome Trust, British Academy, National Science Foundation, Economic and Social Research Council, and the Developmental Leadership Program.

Her articles on gender and leadership include 'Disarming charisma? Mayoralty, gender and power in Medellín, Colombia' in Political Geography, and 'Gender, risk and the Wall Street alpha-male' in the Journal of Gender Studies. She is also author of the monograph 'Social Urbanism and the Politics of Violence: The Medellín Miracle,' is co-editor of the volume 'Seduced and Betrayed: Exposing the Contemporary Microfinance Phenomenon,' and her peer reviewed publications can be found in journals of geography, development, and cultural studies.
