Hon. Research Associate, formerly Senior Lecturer in Cultural Heritage & Museum Studies (retired since 2018), Deakin University

I'm a historian of the British world in the 18-19thC, specialising in personal and domestic goods and behaviours. Many years ago I was a museum curator of history. I used to teach heritage and museum studies, for 15 years at the University of Canberra, and then 12 years at Deakin University in Melbourne. My favourite museum is Sir John Soane's house in London. My latest book is House Museums in the UK and the USA: A History (Rowman & Littlefield, 2017).
I retired in 2018 and am now an Honorary Research Associate in the School of Humanities & Social Sciences. My chief project is a history of the Australian colonial international exhibition, 1879-99. It's an old interest, connected to the history of museums in every state, including 3 where I worked: Museum of Applied Arts & Sciences, Sydney (the benighted Powerhouse); the WA Museum, Perth; and the SA Museum, Adelaide.
