Mair Underwood has a PhD in Anthropology. Her research focuses on the experience of the body and the practices of body modification and decoration. In particular she examines how the body symbolises social boundaries such as those of gender and class. She has conducted research on ageing and human life extension, tattoo and scarification. Recently she has been conducting ethnographic research among bodybuilders online, with a particular focus on their enhancement drug use.
