Professor of History, Macquarie University

I am an historian who focuses on two aspects of history. My current research centres on forgery and fake artefacts; discourses of authenticity; debates over cultural heritage; and the reception of the ancient world. I'm interested in the way the ancient world is experienced today, and our interactions with the nations and peoples whose pasts we study. I also work on scribal practice, religion, and magic in Roman late antique Egypt, primarily on the basis of Greek and Coptic papyri. Across both these research interests I'm interested in the operation of expertise and authority from a range of perspectives.
