Dr Paul Somerville was born in Armidale, Australia and received his B.Sc. degree in Geophysics from the University of New England, Armidale, Australia. He received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Geophysics at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. He spent two years as a Visiting Research Fellow at the Earthquake Research Institute, University of Tokyo. Dr Somerville is Deputy Director, Risk Frontiers, Macquarie University, Sydney. His current interests include earthquake forecasting, earthquake loss modeling, seismic hazard analysis, and tsunami hazard analysis. He has developed earthquake source models and earthquake ground motion prediction models for Australia for use in earthquake hazard and loss modeling. He is Secretary of the Australian Earthquake Engineering Society, and is participating in the revision of the seismic design guidelines for large dams in Australia.
