Richard Bourhis was educated in the French and English school system in Montreal, obtained a BSc in Psychology at McGill University and a PhD in Social Psychology at the University of Bristol, UK in 1977. He was Associate Professor in the Psychology Department at McMaster University in Ontario until 1988, full professor in the Psychology Department at Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) until 2015 and is currently Emeritus Professor at UQAM. Bourhis published over 170 articles/chapters and numerous books in English and French on immigrant/host community relations, discrimination, cross-cultural communication, bilingualism & language planning. He received a doctorate 'Honoris causa' from Université de Lorraine, France, received the Gold Medal Award of the Canadian Psychological Society for lifetime contributions to Canadian Psychology and was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.
