Research Fellow, RMIT University

Simon Lockrey is an award-winning designer, engineer and academic who explores innovation in business and technology through his design, sustainability and business ventures. Simon holds roles as Research Fellow at the Centre for Design and Society (CfD+S) at RMIT University and Director/ Founder of global urban gardening brand Glowpear. Since 2000 he has worked on over 100 commercial design and engineering projects for organisations such as Breville, Dyson, Whirlpool, and Nestle, which has resulted in the generation of many millions of dollars in income and Intellectual Property (IP). His work has crossed a large range of industries including design consultancies, leading commercial interior furniture manufacturers and multinational appliance companies. The products he has designed have been both ‘small run’ and ‘mass produced’, as his roles have covered all stages of the design process. He has worked with a range of materials and processes in both design and manufacturing environments.

Simon has also run global academic research projects valued at over $1 million since 2010, related to life cycle assessment (LCA), co-design, emerging technology, energy efficiency and sustainability strategy, contributing novel knowledge, innovations and publications in academic journals through to mass media outputs. Recent projects include the Dyson DC39 cylinder cyclone vacuum cleaner, designed, engineered and commercialised for global markets; Glowpear Urban Garden, self-funded design and ongoing global commercialisation activities into new urban gardening innovations; LCA in the last frontier: Environmental impact reduction strategy for the Australian Antarctic Division; and identification of potential opportunities for increased fuel cell deployment in Australia for Ceramic Fuel Cells.

Simon has won many international design and innovation awards for his efforts. He keynotes at international conferences, mentors young designers in teaching roles, and applies practical experience to sustainability projects engaging industry, manufacturers and wider community sectors.
