IRC Cara Mobility Fellow, School of History & Archives, University College Dublin

I am an Irish Research Council/Marie Curie COFUND CARA Postdoctoral Fellow (2011-2014) based in University of Toronto and University College Dublin and also 2012 Alice Fisher Fellow at the Barbara Bates Center for the Study of the History of Nursing, University of Pennsylvania.

My research interests include Russian and Soviet history, history of sport and physical culture, and history of medicine. My monograph (New York; London: Routledge, 2012) focuses on Soviet physical culture in the 1920s and 1930s. This examines the origins of Soviet physical culture and how it was used in an attempt to modernize and civilize its population in the first two decades of Soviet power. It situates Soviet physical culture within a wider international framework and argues that the ideology of physical culture and the culture of the body was essential to the larger project of constructing the new Soviet citizen.
