Tom Williams

Tom Williams is a documentary photographer, artist and researcher whose practice is centred around visual documentary storytelling and socially engaged art projects. His current research explores ways in which photography can bring people together and co-create narratives across geographical distance. He is a lecturer in photography at the University of Wollongong.

In 2019 Tom was the inaugural recipient of the NSW Minister for the Arts' Award for Visual Storytelling, culminating in an exhibition at the State Library of New South Wales.

Tom's photographic work has been featured in festivals and galleries in Australia, South East Asia and Latin America. These include the State Library of New South Wales, FotoFreo, The Angkor Photography Festival in Cambodia, Head On Photo Festival, The CCP Documentary Photography Award, Elizabeth Street Gallery, Sydney Theatre Company and the Reportage Festival of Photojournalism.

He was awarded the CCP Documentary Photography Award for his co-created long term project 'Neighbourhood'. His work has also been exhibited in solo exhibitions at The Colour Factory Gallery (Melbourne), PhotoSpace Gallery, School of Art, ANU (Canberra); and Wollongong City Gallery. His work has appeared in numerous publications, including The Guardian Australia, Sydney Morning Herald, Monocle Magazine, and Neighbourhood Paper. His photographic series have also been published in New Philosopher Magazine, Take Magazine, Good Weekend and The Big Issue.
