Brain atrophy linked with cognitive decline in diabetes

Cognitive decline associated with type 2 diabetes has been attributed to brain atrophy, or shrinkage, resembling patterns seen in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease.

New research from Monash University shows a potential mechanistic link between type 2 diabetes and dementia - both highly common disorders affecting Australia’s ageing population.

By 2013, an estimated 3.3 million Australians will have diabetes. Therefore, future research will focus on preventing and slowing cognitive impairment in sufferers.
