Breastfeeding promotes earlier development

Babies who are breastfed show signs of early development in areas of the brain associated with language, emotion and cognition.

A study using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the first to show that differences associated with breast feeding in the brain development of babies are evident almost straight away.

Researchers compared the brain development of a group of children under the age of four. Those children who had been exclusively breastfed for at least three months had enhanced brain development compared to those who had been fed on formula or a combination of formula and breast milk.
