Century-old readings used to confirm global warming

Surveying data from 1872 has been used with modern observations to help confirm the anthropogenic rise of the oceans.

The HMS Challenger expedition, from 1872 to 1876, took readings of ocean levels and temperatures, by dropping hundreds of meters of rope with attached thermometers into the ocean.

Researchers at the University of Tasmania believe the data shows that we have underestimated global warming by up to 17%.
