Flood damage to reef goes down to the core

More information has been uncovered to show how extreme weather events - such as the 2011 Queensland floods - impact the health of coral reefs.

Researchers from University of Western Australia examined core samples of corals from the southern Great Barrier Reef to detect damage done by run off from the Fitzroy River.

The coral core samples are regarded by scientists as “archives of climate change” and can provide information on climatic changes going back almost 100 years.
