‘Fussy’ pandas change diet with the seasons

New research from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the University of Sydney has helped to explain the “fussy” eating habits of pandas.

Pandas travel long distances in order to eat the shoots and leaves of different bamboo varieties in an attempt to maintain a balanced diet and reproduce.

The summer forage gives them high levels of protein for muscle growth, and the winter forage gives them calcium for milk production and bone strength.

These findings will greatly help conservationists in the quest to save the Chinese panda from extinction.
