Indian migrants on 457 visas exploited

Indian migrants on 457 visas are being grossly exploited by employers in Australia and being forced to work long hours - sometimes more than 15 a day - in substandard conditions.

Research from Macquarie University, published in the Economic and Labour Relations Review, presented findings from a three year qualitative study on the experiences of temporary skilled migrants from India living and working in Australia.

The paper outlined many case studies, including of those lured to Australia with false work promises by agents who demanded tens of thousands of dollars for their services.

Many of those interviewed were being forced to accept poor conditions by employers in order to avoid deportation and pay off their debts.
