Itches and pain distinguish skin cancers

The prevalence of itches and pain in patients with skin cancer can help clinicians identify which of these cancers are melanoma, new research suggests.

The research, which included 268 skin cancer patients, found the overall prevalence of itch across skin cancers was 36.9% and pain 28.2%.

However, these symptoms were mostly absent in the cancers found to be melanomas.

Study authors wrote this finding highlighted the importance of a simple bedside evaluation when identifying suspicious skin lesions.
