New mineral discovered in Western Australia

A new mineral – dubbed “putnisite” – has been discovered in Western Australia.

Mineralogy researcher Dr Peter Elliott from the University of Adelaide uncovered the mineral, which has a unique structure and composition that differentiates it from the more than 4,000 known mineral species.

Unlike most minerals, which can be grouped together in small families, putnisite is unrelated to any other mineral groups.
