New way to measure pain

Researchers have developed a technique for measuring pain using magnetic resonance imaging.

Over four studies they identified a pattern of brain activity associated with heat-induced pain, compared the pattern with the brain’s response to warmth and social pain and its response to anaesthesia.

The research could lead to objective ways of measuring pain.
