Rock defects put the brakes on earthquakes

Defects in rocks below the earth’s surface have a substantial effect on the transmission of seismic waves, including those caused by earthquakes.

Defects, known as “dislocations”, in the structure of mantle rock impede the passage of seismic waves as they make their way through the mantle.

The study’s findings contribute to a greater understanding of the seismological makeup of the Earth’s internal structure.
