Geoffrey Brooks

Geoff Brooks is a Professor in the School of Engineering at Swinburne. His own expertise is in the field of process metallurgy and he has published over 250 papers on various aspects of steelmaking, aluminium and metals production. Geoff is also active in metals recycling, the application of solar energy to metals production and processing of materials on the surface of the moon. He is also been active in Dark Matter research working with other researchers on engineering aspects of the SABRE detector being developed for the Stawell Underground Physics Laboratory and also working on an Axion detector at Swinburne. He has held senior positions at University of Wollongong, McMaster University in Canada, CSIRO. Geoff is now the Head of the Extra-Terrestrial materials processing group at Swinburne and a Program Leader in the ARC Steel Innovation Hub. Geoff received his PhD at the University of Melbourne in 1994; he has a Degree in Chemical Engineering at RMIT and a Bachelor of Arts (HPS, Media) from Swinburne. In 2013, Geoff was awarded the John Elliott Lectureship by the AIST, acknowledging his contribution to process metallurgy. In 2018, he was awarded the Distinguished Lecture Award by the The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society in 2018 for his contribution to his field. Geoff is a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining.
