Laboratory Head, Department of Microbiology and Immunology, The University of Melbourne

Dr Adam Wheatley leads a research team aiming to better understand antibody-based immunity to important viral diseases such as influenza and SARS-CoV-2. After a PhD at the University of Melbourne, he undertook post-doctoral training at the Vaccine Research Center, National Institutes of Health, USA, where he studied convergent antibody signatures in subjects receiving experimental influenza vaccines. Since returning to the Doherty Institute in 2015, he and his team are actively researching antibodies, B cells and vaccines. In particular, they focus on:
- mechanisms to generate broad and durable antibody responses
- identification of potent and effective human monoclonal antibodies against viruses
- design and pre-clinical testing of novel vaccines
