Professor of Genetics, Cellular and Molecular Toxicology , University of Ibadan

Prof. Adekunle A. BAKARE is an Alumnus of the University of Ibadan, Nigeria where he obtained his B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D degrees in Zoology. His area of specialization is Genetics, Cellular and Molecular Toxicology. He had his Postdoctoral training as a TWAS/CSIR Postdoctoral Fellow at India Institute of Toxicology Research (IITR), Lucknow India; and with UI/McArthur Foundation Grant in the Department of Bioanalytical Ecotoxicology, Helmholtz Institute of Environmental Research, Leipzig, Germany. He was an Alexander Von Humboldt (AVH) George Forster Experience Researcher Fellow in the Molecular Cell Biology Group of the Department of Environmental Health Sciences, Institute for Environmental medicine and Hospital Hygiene, Freiburg, Germany. In 2019, he also utilised AVH short-term renewed research stay/Fellowship in the Department of Bioanalytical Ecotoxicology, Helmholtz Institute of Environmental Research, Leipzig, Germany. So far he has more than two decades’ experience as a University Lecturer first in the Department of Pure and Applied Biology, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, Oyo State and now in the Department of Zoology, University of Ibadan, Nigeria. He has trained and graduated several B.Sc. and M.Sc. students; and Ph.D students. His major research focus is genotoxicity and mutagenicity of xenobiotics in the Nigerian environment. This is apart from his other studies in molecular malaria entomology, population genetics, ecotoxicology and human molecular genetics. He participated in an investigation into the molecular mechanisms underlying apoptosis induction and cell cycle modulation by isothiocyanates (ITCs) obtained from cruciferous vegetables in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and non-transformed liver cells. He is presently a co-investigator in one of University of Ibadan Research Foundation (UIRF) Grant on a University collaborative project entitled “The development, production and characterization of adult neural stem cells from African Giant rat (Cricetomys gambianus Waterhouse). Prof. Bakare is a member of many professional bodies; and has attended and participated in many conferences and workshops. He has held several administrative positions in the University of Ibadan. Prof. Bakare is the immediate past Managing Editor of Journal of Science Research; presently the Journal Secretary of “The Zoologist”, the official Journal of Zoological Society of Nigeria, one of the Associate Editors of Toxicology Reports, an Elsevier Journal; and President of Genetic Toxicology Association of Nigeria (GTAN). He has published widely in peer reviewed journals.
