Alan Petersen is Professor of Sociology in the School of Social Sciences at Monash University. He researches in the fields of the sociology of health and medicine, the sociology of new biotechnologies, and gender and society.

Alan's recent books include The Body in Question (Routlege, 2007), The Politics of Bioethics (Routledge, 2011) and Ageing Men, Masculinities and Modern Medicine (Routledge, 2013) (edited with Antje Kampf and Barbara Marshall).

He is a member of The Australian Sociological Association, The British Sociological Association, and the International Sociological Association. He also serves on the Gene Technology Regulator's Ethics and Community Consultative Committee (2011-2014). Between 2011 and 2012, he was a Member of the National Enabling Technology Strategy's Stakeholders' Advisory Council.
