Professor of Economics, University of Southern Queensland

Professor Allan Layton, BEcon (Hons), MEcon, PhD (Qld), received his Doctorate in 1982 and was appointed Professor in 1992. During his academic career he has held academic posts at Latrobe University, Griffith University, Macquarie University, University of Queensland, Queensland University of Technology and University of Southern QLD in Australia, and at Columbia University in the US.

He was Head of School of Economics and Public Policy (1992 – 1995) and also Head of School of Economics and Finance (1995-2005) at QUT. He then was Dean of the Faculty of Business and Law at the University of Southern Queensland (2006 -2013), and also held concurrent appointments at USQ during this time of Pro Vice-Chancellor (Partnerships), 2006–2010, and Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research Development), 20011–2012. He has now stepped down from university management roles and is currently Professor of Macroeconomics at the University of Southern QLD.

His research and teaching interests span international business cycle analysis, financial and monetary economics, macroeconomic policy, provisioning of public infrastructure, applied econometrics, and, most recently, anthropogenic carbon emissions and the interplay between the business cycle and such emissions.

He is the author of the 1994 book Modern Australian Macroeconomics, co-author of the book Economics for Today (2002, 2005, 2008, 2011 and 2015), and has published widely in international academic journals in his areas of expertise.

He has also acted as consultant to a number of private and public sector organisations in Australia and in the US. He was a Board Member of QLD Transmission and Supply Corporation (1994-1996), a Deputy Board Member of QLD Treasury Corporation (1994 – 2000), a Board Member of Farmacule BioIndustries Pty Ltd (2004 – 06), a Board Member of the Toowoomba Chamber of Commerce (2009 – 2013), and Council Member of the Southern QLD Institute of Tafe (2008 – 2014).

In the infrastructure provisioning area he Chaired the 2002 LGAQ Public Inquiry into Funding Mechanisms for QLD Road and Transport Infrastructure, and was co-author of the 2004 Reports, “Building Our Future: The Need for Increased Infrastructure Investment in QLD” and “The Roads Solution – Securing a Better Travelling Future for SEQ”.
