Research Officer, La Trobe University

Moving over from a teaching and research position in the School of Social Sciences (SoSS) at Monash University, Dr Andrea Waling has been brought on board to work with Prof Gary Dowsett, Dr Duane Duncan and Dr Steven Angelides on an ARC discovery project, “Muscling Up: Australian Men, Sexualisation and Body Image Enhancement” (2015-2017). She recently graduated with a PhD in sociology and critical men’s studies, and her research interests include men and masculinities, Australian identity, and raunch culture, with a focus on representations of men and masculinity in media, and the lived experiences of men. Her PhD dissertation examines the prevalence of iconic masculinities as they infiltrate the Australian consciousness, and determines the extent to which these stereotypes may still hold currency within modern Australian society. Her PhD thesis is currently being adapted into a book entitled White Masculinity in Contemporary Australia: The Good Ol’ Aussie Bloke for publication in 2019. Her research and teaching interests include theoretical and empirical examinations of men and masculinity, investigations of sex and gender in the media, sexualisation and raunch culture, men’s bodies, men’s health, and LGBTIQ+ issues. She is currently working on a small pilot study exploring how men’s motivations for sending ‘Dick Pics’ are framed in contemporary media.

Outside of ARCSHS Andrea is a CI on a series of collaborations with Dr James Roffee (Monash University) investigating LGBTIQ experiences of safety and unsafety in Australian universities, and with David Fildes (AHSRI) exploring the experiences of CALD men in Men’s Sheds. Andrea is an ordinary board member of the Zoe Belle Gender Collective working group (2012-Present), as well as on the board of directors for The American Men's Studies Association (2017-2019). Andrea is co-chairing the 2018 Annual American Men's Studies Association Conference with Dr Jonathan A. Allen and Dr Frank Karioris. Her paper co-authored with Dr James Roffee published in Safer Communities recieved the 'Outstanding Paper in the 2017 Emerald Literati Network Awards for Excellence.'
