Lecturer in Education, University of Sheffield

I am a Lecturer in Education at the University of Sheffield, UK, and the author of several books: The Cynical Educator (2017, Mayfly), Benign Violence: Education in and beyond the Age of Reason (2014, Palgrave), and, with Roy Goddard, Education and Philosophy: An Introduction (2017, Sage).

Research interests include the history of schooling, examination and meritocracy, the role of cynicism in education, and the role of philosophy more generally in constructing and troubling the aims of Western education. My research traces the development of educational subjectivities, including the history of our commitment to the supposed inherent value of education and the importance of being ‘educated’.
