Senior Lecturer in Sociology, Monash University

Barbara Barbosa Neves is a Senior Lecturer in Sociology at Monash University. She is also the Jacques Leclercq Chair in Digital Technology & Society (2019) at the University of Louvain (UCLouvain), Belgium. In addition, she is an elected board member of the International Sociological Association (ISA).

Barbara is a sociologist of technology, working at the intersection of ageing and new technology. In particular, her research focuses on loneliness, social connection, and inclusion in later life. She looks at how emerging technologies – from communication apps to robotic companions – can work for diverse groups of older Australians, rather than excluding them.

Her work in both Sociology and Computer Science has been awarded and recognised in North America, Japan, Europe, and Australia. She was recently named one of the ABC Radio National's Top 5 Humanities and Social Sciences Scholars (2019).
