Principal Research Fellow, Sustainable Minerals Institute, The University of Queensland

Barry completed his Bachelor of Science Degree majoring in Pure and Applied Chemistry at the University of NSW, followed by Master of Chemistry formal course work Masters in Analytical Chemistry majoring in toxicology. He then completed his Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Tasmania on the ‘Development and Determination of Trace Metals by Furnace Atomic Absorption’. Barry has worked in various Universities, a Government Research Institutes and a Government Department and is currently Principal Research Fellow with the CMLR at UQ.

Barry’s research focus is on contaminant pathways and processes of mine wastes, chemical forms of metals and metalloids in mine wastes using Synchrotron X-ray techniques, bioaccessibility and bioavailability of metals and metalloids and risk assessment of human and environmental toxicological effects from mine wastes, management of cyanide in gold mining. Much of his work covers the determination of contaminant issues to human health and the environment associated with current and post mining landscapes and offsite impacts.
